Food Safety

Food safety and quality are our number one priorities at Borders Melon Company. We became one of the pioneering companies in food safety, in the watermelon industry, by having all facets of our operation tested and certified safe by Primus Laboratories to ensure an end product 100% safe for the consumer. We were among the first in the industry to wash and sanitize our watermelons to reduce the risk of contamination from food borne pathogens. We are proud of our superior four star rating under the Primus scoring system. To achieve this level of compliance each step in the supply chain, every farm, harvest crew, cooler and packing facility must be audited by Primus Labs at least once per year, with no critical violations noted. There is no substitute for quality, and at Borders Melon Company, you can rest assured "food safety" is an inherent element in our definition of "quality". Simply the best - Borders Premium Watermelons.

The "United Fresh Produce Association" in conjunction with the "Produce Marketing Association" and the "Canadian Produce Marketing Association" is developing a standardized produce trace back system which will enhance the speed and efficiency of produce traceability systems in the future. The Produce Traceability Initiative ( PTI ) has a bold vision which outlines a course of action to achieve supply chain wide adoption of electronic traceability of every case of produce by the year 2012. Borders Melon Company has done extensive research and is already prepared with a solution for 2009. Through a partnership with HarvestMark® we are now offering product level traceability as an online service. Any customer can type in the unique HarvestMark® code, without login or password, from any of our watermelon labels, and determine where that melon came from as well as learn about Borders Melon Company. Retailers will have a custom login for additional information and feedback about the product.

In addition to providing general information on our company and our products, this detailed traceability program will provide the specific information needed to quickly identify the source of a product in the event there is ever a food safety related question, or product recall which arises. We look forward to continued participation in the Produce Traceability Initiative, and working with everyone in the fresh produce industry as we continually monitor food safety in our efforts to deliver the safest and freshest food possible to the consumer
